Creative Process

When brainstorming for my poster, I tried to come up with a design which would both represent the Arts and Cultures program at Dawson as well as my own interests. When thinking about my interests, the first thing that came to my mind was languages. I designed this poster around the foreign languages taught at Dawson, i.e., Mandarin Chinese, Hebrew, Greek, Italian, German and Spanish. I researched on words which would correspond to the meaning of L.E.A.P (Learning, Energized, Across, Profiles) and managed to find a translation of the acronym using the first letter of the word in the chosen languages. I made sure the word LEAP stands out and that every word had a distinct font to represent the distinct languages and cultures. For the background, I tried to mix what arts and cultures mean to me. I was, of course, inspired by the countries in which the foreign languages taught at Dawson are spoken. On the upper left corner, there are red Chinese lanterns to represent the Chinese culture and the Mandarin language. The flag of Israel is there to represent both the language of Hebrew, but also Judaism by showing the Star of David. The famous oeuvre of Michelangelo is there to represent the Italian language and culture, but also visual arts in general. I also included a painting of Maria Theresa of Austria to refer to the German language, and the link between art and history. A more modern picture of the island of Santorini in Greece represents the country, but also a famous and unique architecture which to me is a form of art and a reflection of a culture. For the Spanish culture, I added a graceful flamenco dancer in a red dress, bringing the color back from the lantern at the bottom right corner, to add my own passion for dancing. My unique touch to this project would be part of a handwritten letter in English, the language of tuition of the college, which I received from a friend upon leaving a country which is not my home country but feels more like home than Canada. I added it to represent my passion for writing and the literature component to my education in the profile of arts and cultures.
