ARTIST STATEMENT
About: Headliner
When it comes to making art, I believe myself to be a bit of everything, but mostly I am a writer. Everything I create comes from words, how they assemble and dissemble, what they say and what they do, what they mean, and how they sound. I have a burning passion for languages of all sorts, for exotic writing systems which ring no bell to one but draws the world to another. My pieces of writing vary in genre and format, but usually stand within the category of dramatic fiction and take the form of short stories or novelettes. I seek to tell the stories of those who feel unheard, misunderstood, or misrepresented, through the fictional worlds of the characters I build. For this reason, I often spend a lot of time researching different cultures, different perspectives, and different values to accurately portray a struggle that might not be my own. Out of personal interest, I also tend to write about gender issues, sexism, and gender expression. I center my stories around the narration, which I make to be as subjective as possible regardless of the point of view on which it stands. I like my work to be relatable, so I make sure things are raw, scenes are explicit, language is crude and the blood is real. My writing is usually a reflection of who I am as an emotive being: it is irrational, it is reckless and it is intense, but also sensitive and emotional. I get my biggest inspiration from the injustice I witness as part of my travels and the dangers awaiting my solo female traveler self on my future trips, as well as my personal problems and emotions.
